JIMMY CLIFF – `Struggling Man` (Island ILPS 9235) BLACK MUSIC AUGUST 1974: Vol. 1 / Issue 9

BLACK MUSIC AUGUST 1974: Vol. 1 / Issue 9

JIMMY CLIFF – `Struggling Man` (Island ILPS 9235).

Struggling Man / When You`re Young / Better Days Are Coming / Sooner Or Later / Those Good Old Days / Can`t Stop Worrying, Can`t Stop Loving You / Let`s Seize The Time / Come On People / Can`t Live Without You / Going Back West: –

These tracks are some, if not all, of the remainder of what Cliff recorded with Island. “Sooner Or Later”, “Those Good Old Days” and “Struggling Man” all hark back to Jimmy`s Trojan days and his “Wonderful World” style. These are my favourite tracks because Jimmy manages, in them, to communicate what is essential to his music and this is his personality and his identity. His lyrics gain from being simple and direct as he speaks about his past, present and future. The LP shows Cliff at his most versatile and satisfying for quite a while.
